    “There's a writing maxim that the real story is “There's a writing maxim that the real story is always told in the subtext – that what characters refuse to say, can't say, or say sideways is more emotionally truthful than anything they say directly.” In this week's Monday Writing Motivation, I look at ‘the shape of what isn't said’ and work through an example from popular genre fiction. In the final scene of a cosy murder mystery – a form not typically celebrated for its psychological depth – a narrator returns a borrowed dog to its owner, newly released from prison, charges against him dropped. The murder has been solved. The cerebral work of the novel is done. What remains is the emotional work, and the writer chooses to do it almost entirely without direct statement.     We’ve been running our writing retreat since 201 We’ve been running our writing retreat since 2015 and, we aim to provide the space and opportunity for our participants to feel their own creative surge. Somehow, the city always works its magic, as does the alchemy of a gathering of like-minded souls. Working with writers from across the globe, each bringing their unique projects and perspectives, never fails to energise me. I’ll be honest: dedicating focused attention to each person’s writing for an hour each day is demanding work. Yet it’s also invigorating. Their creative breakthroughs ignite our own imagination.
