“There's a writing maxim that the real story is “There's a writing maxim that the real story is always told in the subtext – that what characters refuse to say, can't say, or say sideways is more emotionally truthful than anything they say directly.”

In this week's Monday Writing Motivation, I look at ‘the shape of what isn't said’ and work through an example from popular genre fiction. In the final scene of a cosy murder mystery – a form not typically celebrated for its psychological depth – a narrator returns a borrowed dog to its owner, newly released from prison, charges against him dropped. The murder has been solved. The cerebral work of the novel is done. What remains is the emotional work, and the writer chooses to do it almost entirely without direct statement.

“What happens when a storyteller trades land for “What happens when a storyteller trades land for water — and lets the slow rhythms of a narrowboat teach him how to write, live, and listen?”

A big day for Waterlines as we hit GO on the printing with Tertius van Eeden, CEO of @printondemandza - a game changer for smaller print runs, indie presses and self-published authors.

We have ordered an extra TEN COPIES of Waterlines, Richard’s collection of essays inspired by life on a narrowboat. If you would like to order a SIGNED COPY, this is your last chance before Richard returns to the UK. Please email Trish on Trish@allaboutwritingcourses.com to secure your copy.

🇿🇦For South Africans, the book costs R280 ex postage (R69 PUDO or R100 door to door).
🇬🇧For friends in the UK, the book will ship after 12 March.

Whether you write with publication in mind or simply for pleasure, Waterlines will remind you that great stories don’t come from forcing words, but from learning to flow with them. It invites you to slow down, listen, and rediscover the quiet joy that fuels the act of writing itself.

For readers of Annie Dillard, Anne Lamott, Natalie Goldberg, and Julia Cameron — and for anyone who finds in words their way of navigating the world — Waterlines offers a fresh voyage along the canals of craft and creativity.

The frown. The jaw clench. The stomach that drops. The frown. The jaw clench. The stomach that drops. These feel like showing – but they've stopped working. They tell your reader what to think as efficiently as a label would.

Real emotional showing is different in kind, not just degree. It's the character who picks up an object they don't need and puts it down again. The one who straightens a picture that's already straight. Actions that contain emotion without naming it – and leave your reader leaning forward.

In this week's Monday Writing Motivation, I look at why the frown has stopped working — and how to find the specific, oblique detail that makes readers feel something real.

Anne Lamott said it best: "You own everything that Anne Lamott said it best: "You own everything that happened to you. Tell your stories. If people wanted you to write warmly about them, they should have behaved better."

The first rule of memoir writing? Write the story. Whatever happened to you, you own it.

Too often we're put off by worries: What right do I have? Who will I expose? What will my children think?

But if the desire exists to write the story, that comes first.

Join Jo-Anne Richards and me on February 10 for a free webinar where we'll help you claim your story with confidence.

We’ve been running our writing retreat since 201 We’ve been running our writing retreat since 2015 and, we aim to provide the space and opportunity for our participants to feel their own creative surge. Somehow, the city always works its magic, as does the alchemy of a gathering of like-minded souls.

Working with writers from across the globe, each bringing their unique projects and perspectives, never fails to energise me. I’ll be honest: dedicating focused attention to each person’s writing for an hour each day is demanding work. Yet it’s also invigorating. Their creative breakthroughs ignite our own imagination. It thrills us as much as it does our participants when seemingly impossible challenges resolve. Read the article in @private_edition_mag Link in bio - Jo-Anne
