In Tips for Writers, Writing Challenge, Writing Competitions, Writing Exercises

All About Writing’s latest flash fiction challenge offers the winner a literary assessment on 5000 words of writing worth R 2900 / £ 170 or a voucher to the same value to use on one of our courses or programmes.

Write a scene in which your character finds themselves in a crisis/emergency situation. Show us how your character responds. Your character does not necessarily have to be the hero of the piece.

Write no more than 250 words. Submit your entry here or paste your entry into the form below by midnight on 30 September 2023.

Writing Tips:

  1. Don’t explain your character’s thoughts and feelings, allow these to be revealed through the scene.
  2. Allow us to experience the scene, in all its sensory detail. Use sight, sound, smell, feel, and possibly taste.
  3. Use small, specific, details to show big events and emotions.
  4. In fast paced, action filled scenes, slow down.
  5. Don’t think about what you would do in this situation. Think about your character and the kind of choices they might make.
