Win a writing assessment with our Flash Fiction Challenge

In Tips for Writers, Writing Challenge, Writing Competitions, Writing Exercises

All About Writing’s latest flash fiction challenge offers the winner a literary assessment on 5000 words of writing worth R 2900 / £ 170 or a voucher to the same value to use on one of our courses or programmes.

To wrap up this very eventful year, write a piece of flash fiction inspired by a headline in your news source of choice. Please include the headline in your entry.

Writing Tips:

  1. Use the headline as inspiration for a story, don’t recreate the actual story from the article.
  2. Do not “tell” us what happens. “Show” it to us, second by second.
  3. Show us, in a scene, action, dialogue, thought and observed detail.
  4. Don’t use thought in an obvious way. Make sure any scraps of thought sound like natural thought in the moment, rather than an explanation.
  5. Allow the tension and uncertainty to rise. Make sure we’re desperate to know more.

Write no more than 250 words. Submit via the form below, or click here to submit.
