Secrets of the trade: how to write movie scenes that wow

 In Invitations, Screenwriting courses, Workshops

For a hundred years and more, movies have been surprising, titillating and entertaining us with stories that are as ephemeral as spring blossom, or as consequential as the deepest human truths.

In just an hour or a little more, screenwriters have managed to condense the most moving love stories, the most energizing tales of derring-do, or the most inspiring stories of human achievement.

Now, we can’t teach you to reach the summit of screenwriting – but we can equip you with some of the skills of the craft, and introduce you to the exhilarating world of what goes on behind the scenes of any movie script.

Join us on Saturday 13 and 20 June for a two-hour exploration of two memorable scenes from the movies. We’ll show you what goes into writing a great scene – and what lessons we can draw from that. We’ll set you a small exercise and give you instant feedback. All this for the cost of little more than a breakfast out (remember those?)

The workshops will be run by two of South Africa’s most experienced screen- and scriptwriters, Michele Rowe and Richard Beynon. Michele is the winner of, among other things, a Golden Dagger for her debut crime novel, What Hidden Lies, and has worked with some of the planet’s most renowned writers and directors. Richard has a long history of working on television drama with well over 1000 scripts to his name, and has written the screenplays for a number of internationally-released movies.

Dates: Saturday 13 and 20 June 2020
Time: 10:00 UK / 11:00 SA
Cost: R325 for one or R 520 for both
