Win a voucher to any of our courses with our June/July Flash Fiction Challenge

In How to write a book, Writing Challenge

All About Writing’s latest writing challenge offers the winner a literary assessment on 5000 words of writing worth R 2750 / £ 150 or a voucher to the same value to use on one of our courses or programmes.

Write a character-driven scene in which your character discovers something absolutely cataclysmic about their partner – or their child. Their reaction, and how much of that reaction they let their companion see, should show us a great deal about their personality – and suggest the direction of the story to come.

Write no more than 250 words. Submit your entry here or paste your entry into the form below by midnight on 31 July 2021.

Writing Tips:

  1. Character drives story. The main character you choose and the way they act, will determine the story.
  2. Before you start to write, consider what each character wants as they enter the scene.
  3. Don’t try to give an objective view of the second character’s revelation. The events themselves do not create story. A story is determined by the perspective from which those events are seen, and what your character chooses to do as a result.
  4. The way your character sees the world, and other characters, will show us more about them and what kind of person they are.
  5. Characters do not always say what they feel. Consider what kind of person your character is. How they think and act may well be at odds.

P.S: Our flagship Creative Writing Course will teach you everything you need to know about characters and showing them on the page.
