The Art of Literary Models: Crafting Truth in Fiction
Ever wondered why some stories feel profoundly true, even when they’re pure fiction? Welcome to the art of literary models – where we craft universes not to predict, but to illuminate the human experience.
Literature has a unique power to resonate with readers by capturing universal truths about the human experience. As writers, our goal is to create that “buzz” – that moment of recognition where readers see themselves or their experiences reflected in our work. This is achieved not through scientific accuracy, but through emotional honesty and keen observation of human nature. When crafting your stories, strive to uncover and articulate these universal truths that connect us all.
Today’s writing tips
- Observe and Describe: Focus on detailed observations of human behaviour and interactions. Unlike scientific models, your goal is to describe rather than predict. Pay attention to the nuances of everyday life and incorporate them into your writing.
- Balance Personal and Societal Elements: Weave together individual character arcs with broader social contexts. Consider how societal pressures influence your characters’ decisions and growth, much like Jane Austen did in “Pride and Prejudice.”
- Embrace Complexity: Don’t shy away from the messy, unpredictable nature of human life. Unlike mathematical equations, your literary model should reflect the intricate, sometimes contradictory aspects of human experience.
Two writing exercises for you
- Character Prejudice Exploration: Create two characters who initially dislike each other based on misconceptions. Write a scene where their prejudices are challenged, forcing them to reconsider their initial judgments.
- Societal Pressure Snapshot: Write a brief scene where a character faces a decision heavily influenced by societal expectations. Show their internal struggle as they weigh personal desires against social norms.
“We’ve all had that buzz, that thrill, that reading something ‘true’ generates. We recognise that the writer has somehow identified a universal ‘truth’ that we have all experienced.”
