 In Writing Challenge

All About Writing’s latest writing challenge offers the winner a literary assessment on 5000 words of writing worth R 2750 / £ 150 or a voucher to the same value to use on one of our courses or programmes.

Write a piece of flash fiction which signals a coming of age in a young person: a child or teenager. In this scene or scenes, something happens which serves to thrust them from innocence to a more experienced version of themselves.

Write no more than 250 words. Paste your entry into the body of an email and send to pam@allaboutwritingcourses.com by midnight on 30 September 2020.

Writing Tips:

  • Don’t be too “on the nose” about the lesson your character learns. Your readers are clever and can pick up on nuance.
  • Writing from the perspective of a young person, try to use something of their “voice” – the way they see the world, their vocabulary, the kind of images they would use.
  • Remember that you have a lot at your disposal when showing how a
character feels: the way they see others or the world, physiological sensations within their body, gestures, body language, and thought.
  • Don’t use “thought” too obviously to explain things to the reader.
  • Be subtle with shows of emotion. Avoid “purple” prose. As the saying goes: when feelings run hot, write cool.
