What’s on in May: Humour writing workshop, a free webinar, and more!

In All About Writing, How to write a book, Webinars, What's On In, Workshops

A couple of weeks ago we held a Saturday workshop on The Hero’s Journey and My Octopus Teacher. The power of that fundamental story structure was demonstrated neatly by the fact that this week it won the Oscar for best documentary.

If you want to join the select band of writers who’ve learned all the lessons The Hero’s Journey can teach them about structure and character, then sign up for our The Hero’s Journey Course which kicks off on May 27. It’s just one of a range of programmes – some free, some not – that we’re offering this month.

Watch the video above or scroll through the options below to find the perfect course for you or as a gift for a loved one.

My Octopus Teacher Storytelling Workshop

Netflix’s My Octopus Teacher has taken the world by storm. Its string of festival victories culminates now in a Bafta win, and an Oscar nomination. Free Webinar: How to add humour to your toolkit of writing skills

Humour is an indispensable ingredient of creative writing – and yet it’s a subject that is very seldom raised in writing courses or in books on creative writing.

It enlivens dialogue, adds a dimension to character, and provides a welcome relief to suspense and drama.

On May 12, we’ll be holding a webinar on the role of humour in fiction and non-fiction. We’ll give our thoughts on the subject and then field your questions. It’s free! Register now.

Your character is working with a new colleague, who has only recently been employed. In the course of this scene, we (your readers) should begin to suspect that the colleague is not human at all, but a robot. Don’t spell this out to us. Give us the details which raise our suspicions. Your character may or may not yet interpret these clues correctly.

Write no more than 250 words. Submit your entry here by midnight on 31 May 2021. Entry is free.
